Melbu Systems AS participates in INFINIFISH EU Horizon Project

INFINIFISH is a four-year research project funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe program, running from 2025 to 2029. The project brings together partners from across Europe to develop and validate technological solutions for the entire fisheries value chain. The solutions range from reducing fuel consumption and seabed disturbance to optimizing catches and increasing resource efficiency. The goal of the project is to monitor and reduce the impact on the climate from fisheries and enable the fisheries to adapt to the consequences of climate change.

Our role in the project

Melbu Systems will in partnership with SINTEF Ocean develop and validate the InfiniSort technology for robotic fish handling and automated catch registration. In combination with a CatchScanner for determining fish species and weight the InfiniSort system will contain a robotic arm for fish singulation. This will enable automated sorting of catch by species and size which in turn will lead to better resource utilization and fish handling.

The InfiniSort technology will be developed for and tested both on-shore and on-board. During the INFINIFISH project, validation will be focusing on Northeast Atlantic whitefish fisheries. However, as part of the project possible use of the technology in other European fisheries will be explored in a feasibility study.
